Free accommodation exchange ≠ WWoofing

26th July 2011, long-term accommodation @ Wellington

I got to find a place to stay, there is no option cos the hostel that I am currently staying (YHA Wellington) is not allowing anyone to stay more than 10 days. Cannot believe right? Yes, they do. This is the best quality New Zealand hostel I’d stayed so far. 2 big kitchens, 2 big dining area, rooms ok but bed abit soft, theatre/ TV rooms, plenty of sofa, outdoor benches and tables who wants to smoke, next to supermarket, etc. Anyway, overall YHA hostels are above average throughout the country, I guessed.

I saw good rating for Nomads Capital Wellington but below YHA. They may offer weekly rates that may be cheaper than daily. So, I went over to have a look at the place. At the counter, I asked, “may I know if your hostel offers weekly rates?”
The reception paused for 3 seconds and pointed a display board on the desk. “Are you interested in doing work for 3 hours for the hostel in order to exchange for free accommodation?”

My eyes opened wide when I heard this, “FREE???” gosh, I am going to safe NZ$25(RM63) everyday! “Of course!” I said. She smiled.
I was given an agreement to sign that I am only further extended if management is happy with my performance and I need 1 week’s notice if I do not continue to stay as Wwoofer. I signed and preparing to do the job and stay on the next day.

In fact, this may not be titled as Wwoofer cos this doesn’t not go under the proper group that is in farming, agriculture and viniculture. This is working for a few hours and you may receive free accommodation and food, depends on individual Wwoofing offers.
